Happy Spring from OpenMusicProject!

Hello OMP Members - Long time, no newsletter!

Quick update: OpenMusicProject now has

  • 139 registered users from around the globe
  • 403 messages on the discussion board
  • 83 active collaboration projects
  • ~ 200 unique song versions

A big "welcome" to new users that have joined since the last newsletter.

I thought that this week's release of Reason 2.5 by Propellerheads was a good reason to send out a newsletter. If you haven't already done so, go on over to Propellerheads and get your copy of Reason 2.5 - it's free for registered users! It's got a bunch of great new features like a Vocoder, a super new Reverb module, an advanced distortion unit, the Unison "fattener" effect, and two routing and splitter boxes.

To kick start some collaboration with Reason 2.5, I've uploaded a new project called "Mr. Magoo" that uses the new Vocoder and Reverb modules. Let's get some experimentation going so we can all learn how to make the most of the new features!

But remember, OpenMusicProject is "open," so feel free to upload musical snippets created with any platform. Reason is the most popular platform because of its use of common ReFill sound libraries that allow for small file sizes.

As a reminder for those who may have missed it, OMP underwent a major facelift at the end of 2002. Here's a recap of the great new features:

1. No more Flash interface or HTML pop-up windows. OMP is now pure HTML.
2. Projects are now intimately linked with their associated discussion threads.
3. You can now "subscribe" to projects and be notified by email when a new version is uploaded.
4. The OMP system is now completely database-driven - no more flat text files to get corrupted on the server. This should make OMP more robust. Additionally, all the data from the past year has been cleaned up.

You'll also notice some niceties such as an excerpt from the last 3 project-related messages shown on each project's detail page. You can now also bookmark individual projects or send the URL to others.

Happy collaborating!
